Two Woodpeckers

久々に心の琴線に触れたので、平日なのに更新してみる。

A Hawaiian woodpecker and a California woodpecker were arguing about which place had the toughest trees.

ハワイ出身のきつつきとカリフォルニア出身のきつつきが、どちらの場所にある木が堅いかについて議論していました。

The Hawaiian woodpecker claimed that Hawaii had a tree that no
woodpecker could peck.

ハワイ産のきつつきは、ハワイにはどんなきつつきでも穴を開けられない木があると主張しました。

The California woodpecker accepted his challenge, and promptly pecked a
hole in the tree with no problem.

カリフォルニア産のきつつきが、これに挑戦しました。
そして、あっという間に、なんの問題もなく木に穴を開けました。

The Hawaiian woodpecker was in awe.

ハワイ産のきつつきは、驚愕しました。

The California woodpecker then challenged the Hawaiian woodpecker to
peck a tree in California that was absolutely unpeckable.

次にカリフォルニア産のきつつきが、”カリフォルニアにあるまったく歯（くちばし）が立たない木に挑戦してみないか？”とハワイ産のきつつきに持ち掛けました。

The Hawaiian woodpecker expressed confidence he could do it, so accepted
the challenge.

ハワイ産のきつつきは、自分なら穴を開けられる自信があると言い、その挑戦を受けました。

After flying to California, the Hawaiian woodpecker successfully pecked
the tree with no problem.

二羽がカリフォルニアに着くと、ハワイ産のきつつきは、難なくその木に穴を開けることに成功しました。

So the two woodpeckers were now confused.

そんなわけで、二羽のきつつきは混乱しました。

How is it that the California woodpecker was able to peck the Hawaiian
tree and the Hawaiian woodpecker was able to peck the California tree,
but neither one was able to peck the tree in their own state?

カリフォルニア産のきつつきがハワイの木に穴を開けられて、ハワイ産のきつつきがカリフォルニアの木に穴を開けられるのに、どうして、それぞれの地元の木に穴を開けられなかったのでしょうか？

After much woodpecker-pondering, they both came to the same conclusion .

だいぶ長い間、きつつきは考えて、二羽とも同じ結論に達しました．．．

Your pecker is always harder when you're away from home!

くちばしは、家から遠くなるほど堅くなるということです。

pecker　くちばし　には、別の意味があります。
